Discovery of X–rays from Mars with Chandra
نویسنده
چکیده
On 4 July 2001, X–rays from Mars were detected for the first time. The observation was performed with the ACIS–I detector onboard Chandra and yielded data of high spatial and temporal resolution, together with spectral information. Mars is clearly detected as an almost fully illuminated disk, with an indication of limb brightening at the sunward side, accompanied by some fading on the opposite side. The morphology and the X–ray luminosity of ∼ 4 MW are fully consistent with fluorescent scattering of solar X–rays in the upper Mars atmosphere. The X–ray spectrum is dominated by a single narrow emission line, which is most likely caused by O–Kα fluorescence. No evidence for temporal variability is found. This is in agreement with the solar X–ray flux, which was almost constant during the observation. In addition to the X–ray fluorescence, there is evidence for an additional source of X–ray emission, indicated by a faint X–ray halo which can be traced to about three Mars radii, and by an additional component in the X–ray spectrum of Mars, which has a similar spectral shape as the halo. Within the available limited statistics, the spectrum of this component can be characterized by 0.2 keV thermal bremsstrahlung emission. This is indicative of charge exchange interactions between highly charged heavy ions in the solar wind and exospheric hydrogen and oxygen around Mars. Although the observation was performed at the onset of a global dust storm, no evidence for dust–related X–ray emission was found.

An Overview of Technological Developments in Medical Applications of X-Rays and Radioactivity
The years 1895 to 1898 were momentous for their impact on health and human well beings. First, Wilhelm Roentgen noted a glowing fluorescent screen, caused by invisible rays. This event subsequently led to the discovery of X-rays in 1895, and thus the birth of the “atomic ageâ€. Next Becquerel’s investigations of these mysterious rays led to his experiments with uranium salt crystals. He th...

SUMMARY In the early days of the discovery of X-rays, it was widely used in the treatment of benign diseases such as some chronic infections and chronic skin conditions, however, with better recognition of side effects specially carcinogenecity of the radiation, their use in benign diseases are now restricted only to a few of non-malignant conditions, when all else has failed, and with the kno...
متن کاملThe Solar Wind Interaction with Venus and Mars: Energetic Neutral Atom and X-ray Imaging
At the non-magnetized planets Venus and Mars, the solar wind comes in direct contact with the planets’ neutrals. This interaction produces energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) and X-rays. In this paper we review some of the different production mechanisms and present examples of simulated ENA and X-ray images. To extract as much information as possible about the ion and neutral distributions in the o...

The Chandra X-Ray Observatory (CXO), the x-ray component of NASA’s Great Observatories, was launched on 1999, July 23 by the Space Shuttle Columbia. After satellite systems activation, the first x-rays focussed by the telescope were observed on 1999, August 12. Beginning with the initial observation it was clear that the telescope had survived the launch environment and was operating as expecte...
